Sicklepod Senna (Cassia Obtusifolia) is a Chinese herb that grows wild as a weed in the United States. Also called Jue Ming Zi, it is used extensively in Japan by the pharmaceutical industry. Although modern scientific research is not yet extensive, it has been shown to have the following properties:

• Antimicrobial

• Anti-allergic

• Laxative

• Helps prevent DNA damage in liver cells

• The emodin in Cassia prevent carcinogenesis in mice In terms of TCM, Sicklepod Senna

• Helps to remove “heat” from the liver

• Improves visual acuity

• Moistens the intestine and unblocks the bowels

• Has an effect on lipid metabolism by lowering serum cholesterol and blood pressure

Rehmannia glutinosa is a sweet, bitter herb, which in TCM is used to clear heat and cools the blood. It also nourishes the yin and generates fluids. Other therapeutic effects of Rehmania are:

• Protects the liver

• Antifungal

• Cardiotonic

• Decoctions of the herb were used for rheumatological and dermatological purposes

Red yeast rice is an Asian dietary staple made by fermenting red yeast (Monascus purpureus) on rice. It has gained rapid recognition in the United States as a cholesterol-lowering agent. This was because a careful fermentation process yielded specific amounts of statins, the compounds largely held responsible for reducing cholesterol levels. Red yeast rice extract has a number of heart healthy benefits. Scientific research has shown that it helps reduce total cholesterol levels, lowers levels of LDL ("bad") cholesterol, increases levels of HDL ("good") cholesterol, and lowers levels of triglycerides. It appears to accomplish this by restricting the liver's production of cholesterol. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, red yeast rice was used for its therapeutic benefits as both to promote blood circulation, stimulate digestion, treat abdominal pain due to stagnant blood and dysentery, as well as external and internal trauma.

He Shou Wu (Polygomun multiflorum) is widely marketed today as a general anti-aging herb. It protects the heart, supports optimal mental function, improves sleep, and extends youthful vitality. He Shou Wu has also been used according to Traditional Chinese Medicine to purify the blood, cleanse the liver and kidneys, ease constipation, insomnia and nausea. Science has found that it balances blood cholesterol levels, lowers blood pressure.

The Green Tea (Camelia sinensis) extract contains more than 90% polyphenols, an important group of antioxidants which supports a healthy cardiovascular system. Green tea polyphenols help to balance blood cholesterol levels.

Other herbs used in Cholestra are:

• Lo Han (Momordica grosvenorii) fruit extract, which supports the respiratory system and digestion

• Stevia (Eupatorium rebaudianum) extract, which supports blood sugar and pressure levels

• Soy which contains isoflavones with antioxidant properties which protect the cardiovascular system from oxidation of LDL (bad cholesterol)
